In its Living Planet Report 2020, the WWF and Zoological Society of London found that the population sizes of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles have seen an alarming average drop of 68% since 1970, and this decline is even higher in Latin America (WWF, Maria Jose Villanueva, WWF Mexico, November 18, 2020). The report also observed that humanity’s footprint is expanding into once-wild places, and humans are devastating species populations, exacerbating climate change and increasing the risk of zoonotic disease outbreaks, such as the Covid19 outbreak in 2020.
